TOMIA’s 2020 Hackathon: A great success!
December 9, 2020
Dimitris Zoulis, COSMOTE’s Project Manager for Roaming Services and International Synergies, talks to Daniella Torres about how VoLTE, IoT, and 5G will impact the telecoms industry.
One of the many challenges caused by COVID-19 was holding our annual hackathon. Most of TOMIA’s employees are working remotely and many could not meet physically. The fact that, despite these difficulties and restrictions, the event was very successful is especially gratifying. The goal of the 24-hour social coding event — to promote innovative thinking, and empower teams to be daring in trying new technologies and directions to enhance our capabilities — was certainly achieved. A record number of 50 ideas were proposed for the 3 streams (technical, operational and product). 18 teams participated in this year’s hackathon in 4 geographical areas spanning the globe. A panel of judges for each stream awarded prizes for the best-developed ideas in a very well attended virtual company meeting. Apart from being a fun event where participants need to think differently from their usual routine, the hackathon is much more than an academic exercise. The ideas generated will have a practical effect on the company’s activities. As an example, one of the ideas from the 2019 hackathon is currently being used in an implementation in one of our Tier 1 customers. Congratulations to everyone who organized, supported, judged and (above all) participated.
